CAPITAL suggestion
I faithfully read The New York Times, daily. Admittedly I avoid hard news (I use The Shaderoom for that), but I am religious in my commitment to The Arts section. Recently, I read a profile on Chris Nee, the Executive Producer, and Creator of the children’s television program, Doc McStuffins. To me, the most striking aspect of the show was the choice of the black femme lead. Interestingly this wasn’t Nee’s idea. Special thanks to veteran film/television Executive, Nancy Kanter for making the suggestion. I’ve documented the LinkedIn message I sent to her below. Perhaps she’ll never read the note, but maybe someone else will be inspired…
Dear Ms. Kanter,
I just read the recent NYT article profiling Chris Nee.
While I am thrilled that yet another underrepresented individual has been venerated by The Gray Lady, I am struck by the fact the most impactful choice of Doc McStuffins as a Black Girl was suggested by you. I hope that these kinds of shifts, as initiated by executives, who, by most visual accounts, are identifiably White, continue to happen.
All my best,
